Growing a Cabbage Plant, and Swimming Lessons!

Last Saturday was a busy day for us. We went through our hat rack and our shoe closet to organize and get rid of those things that we no longer wear or something that Nico grew out of. Our shoe closet looks great now!

Nico came home with a cabbage plant on Friday. The entire 3rd grade class was given a cabbage plant. They are supposed to grow them for 8-10 weeks, and then harvest them. After harvest, they are to be weighed and then pictured. It's a statewide thing (although they may do it in more than just Idaho?) The teacher chooses the best of her class, and enters it into a drawing. The winner gets $1000 scholarship. Nico named his cabbage plant "Leafy", and Jeff & Allicia let us plant him on the side of the house over by the back gate, on the other side. We planted him on Saturday.

As of today, he has one less leaf, and two of his other leaves are a tad eaten up. I mixed up an essential oil spray that he can use to repel pests, and we will give Leafy some plant food to help him grow.

Our church wrapped up their 24-hour Prayerathon by having an hour of corporate prayer with music and testimony on Saturday afternoon. All of us went. Afterward, it was time to start pizza! We watched Three Stooges, it was Nico's choice, and because Jeff & Allicia and family were out of town, we were able to watch it downstairs! The boys prefer the "New York" style crust, so that's the kind I've been making. (I prefer it too!)

Nico also spent some of the weekend working on his research project. He is transferring his data to Google Sheets, which he was already familiar with because he uses it at school. We were able to log in with his school email address and access his Google Sheets from home. 

Monday was his first night of swimming lessons. The downtown YMCA is a maze and Nico and I easily got lost trying to find the pool. It was a fun adventure and we finally made it. When Guy took him to his lesson on Wednesday, he picked up a map for me. Now we have a route of attack for next time, because after all that I still wasn't able to locate the locker rooms! But now I know where they are.

Nico asked me to put him into a swim CLASS and not private lessons. But for his first class, he was the only one there, so he got the instructor's undivided attention.

On Wednesday he told me that he wanted to do swim lessons EVERY day. That is quite a switch from where he was a week ago.

Nico has pulled out his Pokemon cards again. Him and I played an hour-long game on Tuesday after school (pictured below).

He has also been going through his huge binder of cards and alphabetizing them.

Next week is Nico's drama performance! He is excited. He has to wear all black so I just ordered him some black sweats and black long sleeve shirt from Amazon. He is King Lobster so I think he'll be in a lobster costume. Can't wait to see him perform!

Garden, Fish Park, and the iBee

We tried several times this past week to fly a kite. The gusts of wind seemed wild enough to carry a kite but when we got to the park there was hardly anything! Oh well. We keep the kite in the back of the car in case we need to make an emergency kite flying stop.

On Sunday after church we went to Louie's for lunch with family. Then afterward, Nico drove to Nampa with Papa to pick up the eggs and milk from the farm. The Grandparents Salisbury gave us 2 dozen farm fresh eggs this week (thank you!!), the darkest orange yolks you ever did see! Papa also let us borrow his wheelbarrow and a big shovel (we already have a small Nico-sized one) so that we could move the dirt from our garden. On Tuesday we moved it to the area under our pine trees. We don't plan to take the dirt with us when we move, but will definitely be bringing our garden bed!

Nico happened to be wearing a nice shirt that morning and me a skirt. But it turns out all you need is good shoes and you can get the job done. We were done quickly.

On Monday we went to see Allicia and crew in the morning and brought some bins with us to store in their cellar.

Tuesday, Fish Park!

His favorite part of the Fish Park is the stream-bed in the lobby and the big sturgeon fish that swim under the bridge. So we just did those two things.

We've been… eating cinnamon raisin bread, going for bike rides in the morning, sorting through closets, snuggling, reading, and playing iPad games and watching videos. He is really enjoying read-along books that come with a CD of the story. And of course truck/car books from the library.

Two more weeks until school starts! I am mentioning it to him every so often so he knows it's coming. I've also been trying and trying to remember to enforce him saying "iPad" instead of "iBee". It was one thing that his speech therapist wanted him to work on, but I am so used to him saying "iBee" that I haven't remembered to correct him! We practice saying "iPad" on purpose and he can do it just fine, but it's a habit to say iBee and it's a hard one to break.

Blueberries and Paddle Boats

Lots of fun this past week, scratched some things off our summer to-do list!

Saturday was the market. We stopped by the fountain briefly, but it was a bit too chilly to get wet. Nico got a balloon animal. He asked for a yellow dinosaur.

We also went into the game store on 8th St. briefly and saw some things that we might come back and get later. Marbles, and a train game. I am dubbing summertime: Nico's birthday summer. Instead of getting him one big gift, we are having fun doing and seeing things this summer, and little prizes like marbles and trains along the way are also factored into his birthday. We are planning a ROCKET birthday party for him on his birthday. We are going to set off rockets at Quarry View Park (Old Park). We already reserved the picnic area.

Also on Saturday we went to the park to fly Nico's KITE for the first time. We got it up in the air about 3 times and Nico had a blast. It was windy and cold so I let him wear my jacket. 

There was once where the kite blew upward so hard that it yanked the string from Nico's hand. We had to chase it, and scream at the same time, and eventually we caught it. That was probably the best part of the kite flying experience.

Sunday after church, the Grandparents Salisbury took us to Smoky Mountain Pizza where Nico and I shared a gluten free pizza. WOW was it good! We had a great time with them and with Lexie, who also joined us. We took one home for Guy, too. For Father's Day Nico and I made Guy a treasure map and buried a treasure for Guy in the backyard. That was fun. Later that afternoon, Grandma and Lexie stopped by for a bit and Nico and Lexie climbed up into Nico's bed to watch Curious George.

Wednesday we went blueberry picking. We wanted to go strawberry picking, but the place we were going was all out of strawberries. It rained the whole time we were there picking, but it was still fun. Nico was worried about the rain but I told him it was okay to be out in the rain. "Remember Piggie and Gerald?" He kept asking for an umbrella but I told him that we don't always need an umbrella. He repeated what I said, as he does quite often now "don't always need an umbrella." Then there was a pause, he was looking out the car window and he said "Need an umbrella!!" The whole blueberry crop was under netting, but there were a few rogue birds in there anyway. We met a group of people there, including Allicia & Evie. Nico climbed into a blueberry bush after Evie; thankfully blueberries don't have thorns! We picked about 3 1/2 pounds. Nico preferred dumping my berries into the box instead of picking them himself. It was actually helpful to have him do that. I wanted to bring my camera, but not in the rain!

Today was a fun day, we had a long list of things to do. I told Nico we had 7 things to do and listed them for him while we were in the car. Number 7 was "home". Nico memorized the list and then would recite it, but when he'd get to 7 he'd say: "Seven… uh.. uh… library! Eight…. bookstore and find a train. Nine… Evies house! Ten… home!" It was so silly, he kept adding things to the list. The list mostly consisted of grocery stores. WinCo, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, the Co-op. Nico was a trooper. We got us both a treat at Whole Foods which held us over until lunch. After our 6 things, we dropped off the groceries at home (#7) and went right back out to do the PADDLE BOATS!

There were a lot of ducks, geese, and baby ducks. The ducks sometimes would start going under us so we'd have to stop and back up so they wouldn't get caught in the paddles. Nico had a lot of fun. He couldn't reach the paddles unless he stretched himself and barely sat on the seat. He helped steer for a little bit, and asked me several times to sing "Row row your boat" while I paddled. I decided to do the paddle boats early in the summer because they don't open until 11 AM and in July or August it would be too hot for us even at 11 AM. But today it was perfect.

Nico is mimicking us more and more. I found out that I always say "Oh my goodness, what happened?" whenever Nico has a potty accident because he has started saying that in a surprised voice whenever he has an accident: "Oh muh gaw, wha happen?" And as I'm telling him things he repeats after me voluntarily. I have intended to start doing the vocabulary games the school sent home with him, but I have not remembered. I will! 

Nico found our leftover seeds from last year's garden in our fridge and wanted to plant them. We weren't intending to plant a garden this year, but I figured, why not? So we went outside.

We had to yank some pretty big weeds from the garden bed first, but then we planted the seeds. ALL of them. There was a lot. But we had fun sprinkling the seeds onto the dirt, mixing them in haphazardly with the shovel and then watering with the watering can. We'll see what pops up!

Strider Park

I had a lot of fun using my new camera. It takes really good pictures! And I'm trying to learn all about it. It turns out perfectly to have blog day once a week. I can take pictures all week, use up the battery, and then on Thursday unload all the pictures, change the battery out, and I'm good for the next week.

 He went outside with chalk and drew a hopscotch ALL BY HIMSELF. He even wrote the numbers into the squares. He said "Mommy, a hopscotch!" and then he hopped through it for me. I'm thinking Curious George was his teacher on this one.

Nico fell asleep tonight at 5 PM, in bed, while he was in time out. I went in there and he had pulled the cover over himself and had zonked out. I'm forecasting a wake-up in a few hours. We will then eat some strawberries, watch some Curious George, and then he'll fall asleep in my bed.

I don't think I'm forgetting anything on this busy week. At this rate, I don't ever want summer to end!

Apples and Fried Green Tomatoes

Nico had Friday off from school so we took a trip to the Aquarium. We got there a little early and so we sat in the car eating our snack, and we were pleasantly surprised when a train decided to pass by. Nico was excited about that. At the Aquarium we saw a turtle eating sand. That evening around the dinner table, Guy asked Nico what he saw at the Aquarium and he told him turtle. eat. Then he signed sand. Sure do love it when Nico tells us about the things he sees. He is repeating so many more words and phrases. It is a marvel to be able to communicate with him on this level!

Saturday we went to the Market. We walked to one of the fountains downtown, and then ventured into a game store to look around. It's never too early to get Christmas ideas! :)

On Monday my cousin Sarah came over for a visit. Nico, Sarah, and I spent some time coloring on Nico's collection of fuzzy posters. It was so great to see her and to catch up!

On Wednesday I went to Nico's school to volunteer for the first time. This week is apple week so I cut out a lot of apples! I didn't get to see Nico in his classroom, but it was fun thinking that he was in very close proximity to me. In another two weeks I'll be volunteering again.

For apple week, Nico and his classmates are learning about the life cycle of apple trees. Today they got to taste three different kinds of apples and choose their favorite one. Then they made apple pies. Homework was coloring three different apple trees: one for Spring, Winter, and Fall.

This week we also picked the rest of the tomatoes in our garden and tried out a few green tomato recipes. Nico LOVES picking tomatoes.

You can also see the small leaves of a chard plant sitting on top of the bowl. None of our beans or greens grew very big this year. I'll do some troubleshooting and try again next spring. I think the bulk of our crop next year will be beans. Probably 1 tomato plant, and maybe a lettuce or two. 

So the first recipe I tried was fried green tomatoes. I didn't add enough seasoning and Guy said they tasted much like breaded broccoli stems. ha ha! So I spiced 'em up the second time around and Guy loved them! Adding sugar to the mix seemed to make a difference.

With the rest of the tomatoes I made a salsa. Just green tomatoes, 1 jalapeño, 1 red onion, 1 clove garlic, some olive oil, and that's that! I pureed it all in our food processor and Guy ate it with chips. Yum. Garden success!

State Capitol and Tomatoes

I've been trying to think of things I'd like to do with Nico before preschool starts. Just 3 short weeks before it's time! One of the things I wanted to do was take him to the State Capitol. I have taken him before, but never with a camera, and never armed with pocket change so we could buy a postcard. So on Wednesday I took him to the Capitol with these two things in hand. His favorite part of the Capitol building is the stars that they have painted on the very tippy top of the dome. The postcard we bought has a picture of the stars on it.

Another thing I wanted to do was take Nico on a bus ride. Guy showed some interest in this one, so I think Guy and Nico will be going on a bus ride in the next few weeks.

We also harvested our first tomatoes from the garden. Nico is showing great interest in plucking tomatoes and we've gone out there every day for the past 3 days so that he can pick a tomato. Then we go inside and wash it off and I cut it up for him. He loves them! Seeing the bounty from the garden got me a little more motivated, so I cleaned the garden bed up, soaked some seeds, and planted them today for a fall harvest of lettuce, beans, chard and basil.

I've stopped keeping track of Nico's new words, because he tries to repeat a lot of what we say and is adding new words daily. But a phrase he has started saying is "Byebye Mommy!" He practiced saying "Byebye Van" the whole way to church on Sunday. He got it right some of the time, but kept trying and kept trying, often falling into the habit of saying Mommy instead of Van. Whenever he'd say Byebye, he would also wave his hand. It was interesting to hear him practice over and over and over again. So proud of him!

He read his tractor books and decided to attach some floss to the hitch on the back of his tractors. You can kind of see the floss at the bottom of the picture.

Nico wasn't feeling well on Saturday, woke up with some stomach problems. But we have finally reached the milestone of Nico knowing when he is going to throw up! He asked for his bucket several times, and hung his head in there to wait for it. I don't think it was viral, as he made up for missing breakfast and more after his nap. I think we're dealing with some food intolerances.

We skipped church on Sunday to make sure he was fully recovered.

Nico seems to be a lot more interested in repeating sounds and words this week without being asked. I've stopped recording individual words that he says, because he now repeats too many things to keep track.

Ten-tee

Nico said a sentencey phrase on Monday! I went to the dentist and when I came home, Nico said "Mommy. Ten-tee. Car. Daddy." Interpretation: Mommy went to the dentist in the car, and Daddy stayed home with me! I told the speech therapist about this on Tuesday and she was excited. Also, Nico was really cooperative on Tuesday and Marcia was able to move on to more advanced techniques, like trying to say a word with a consonant on the end, like BED. He's not able to copy the sounds just yet on those. She also worked on repeating sounds a certain number of times, or alternating sounds. Like "buh buh buh" or "buh ba buh ba". Nico caught on to the repetition, but not the alternating. On Thursday (Marcia came over twice this week!) Nico initiated his own ABC app on his iPad and took Marcia through it, repeating everything in it, just like she would have asked him to do. He seems more eager these days to repeat words.

Nico has also been doing a lot of two syllable words all on his own. He said "meatball" by saying "Ha (the Hhh sound that an H makes) bah". The "Ha" means that it was hot. So, he said hot ball! He strung two words together to describe something else! This is definitely a milestone for him. Also, cocoon, and various other random ones.

On Sunday we went to the cabin to hang with family. Nico got to see his cousin Alexis, they have a lot of fun together!

We also saw Sarah, and Allicia and Evie this week. The speech therapist also was here twice, trying to get more appointments in before Nico turns 3 in a few weeks.

Nico got a black eye this week from falling into his bed after trying to swing his leg over the last step without holding onto anything. Ouch!

He would hold two different colors, one in each hand, then scope out where they went, and then ... paused... and said GO! And then would put each color away at the same time.

And one last note - on a walk earlier this week, Nico spotted a MINI on the street, and pointed to it and said "MINI!" So impressed with his car recognition!

Garden

I forgot it was blog day until just a few hours ago! I have been busy preparing for our trip. We leave on Saturday for Washington! I've been prepping meals and making lists and shopping and planning and thinking. But I will take a break right now and recall our past week.

Last Friday we went to Nampa to visit G.G. Loved seeing her again, she sent Nico home with a little wooden box that he plays with every day now. It's a different one than is shown in the picture. He especially loves to put his micro machines in the box, since they fit perfectly.

On Sunday my Dad (aka Papa) dropped off a garden box that he built for me (us). 4' x 4', with posts that go into the ground. He also brought us some plants and some organic dirt!! So Monday afternoon we all went outside and finished digging the post holes (well, Guy did that). It was too hot for much else. Nico and I went back out there Monday night (when the box was shaded) and filled the box with dirt after laying down weed cloth. Then on Tuesday we planted. Tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli. I picked up some more seeds from the Co-op and we'll be planting those soon.

On Sunday night we headed over to Bible Study but when we got there, no one else was there. Nico was so incredibly sad about this and kept saying "Bubby" (Bible) over and over again and pointing to the house, whining and carrying on. We apologized to Nico and told him he could choose where we would go instead. He chose Camel's Back Park. So, we went! We stopped off at Red Robin beforehand and spent the rest of a gift certificate there to get Guy a milkshake. Then at Camel's Back, instead of going for the park, Nico chose to walk over to the foothill that is right next to the park. He intended to climb it, and climb he did! Guy was right behind him the whole way while I stayed behind. They made it all the way to the top and then came back down. As soon as they came back down, Nico turned right around and said he wanted to climb it again. Wow, the energy! But it was time for home and bath and snack and bed, so we trucked home.

Wednesday was a busy day for us. Nico had another speech therapy appointment. New words this week: icky, potato (day-doh), coffee (kah-pee), and apple (ah-buh). Icky, potato and coffee were totally random and not prompted, he just said them out of the blue. Guy and I were just flabbergasted when we both heard him say Coffee for the first time. Apple was prompted by the speech therapist. He said icky in reference to his wet underwear, without being prompted. Oh - one I forgot about was knife "ffff", which he said unprompted because I didn't understand what he wanted when he was pointing to the silverware drawer. He wanted his knife so he could "cut" his steak like I always do. 

Shortly after speech therapy on Wednesady, my Mom arrived to watch Nico while I went to my appointment with the school district regarding Nico's preschool this fall. I was so incredibly impressed with everyone there. I was blown away by how nice and joyful everyone was. Nico's teacher was the sweetest lady. She has a daughter with a lot of the same food allergies that Nico has, and so I felt a little more at ease knowing that she is tuned in to that kind of thing. I'll just be providing Nico's snack instead of the school providing it. Nico will be going to school in the mornings, bussed to and from school only after the first few weeks of me driving him. I am very excited for him!

Today (Thursday), we had the vent cleaners come back out to clean the vents, after having our ductwork fixed on Tuesday. He said that the vents were incredibly dirty. I'm glad we got them cleaned!

Our car had trouble starting today. It tried and tried but wouldn't turn over.  When I pumped the gas it finally started. We made an appointment with the car fixer tomorrow. We don't want anything going wrong on our trip, so we're getting the problem diagnosed and fixed if needed.
